PRINCE GEORGE – Now’s the time when the defending Central Region softball champions need all hands on deck.
And Prince George coach Pat Waguespack got just that in a 2-0 victory over Midlothian in the region quarterfinals.
Usually, outstanding pitcher Lauren Vinson and freshman Sydney Landreth provide the RBI, but a few others took that duty in this contest.
Mired in a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jami Davis singled over Midlo second baseman Kiersten Estes to bring in pinch runner Tessa Allen.
“[Midlothian pitcher Logan Carter] kept jamming me inside,” Royals first baseman Davis said. “So I stepped off a little bit and just waited for the pitch.”
In the sixth, another Royal stepped into the spotlight, Kaitlyn Johnson.
After Maggie Roberts and Ginny Davis singled, Johnson found a two-strike pitch she liked and also smacked it over the second baseman.
Roberts slid in for a two-run advantage that PG would hold up with heads-up defense by Roberts and shortstop Katie Christopher, and Vinson’s 10th strikeout to end the contest.
“Every at bat I was thinking, just hit the ball, hit the ball, hit the ball,” Johnson, a third baseman, said. “I didn’t care where it went, I just wanted a base hit.”
